Rögnvaldur Gísli Pétursson was born on October 23, 1873 in Skagafjarðarsýsla. He died at the Borg Nursing Home in Mountain, N. Dakota on November 16, 1961. He took the last name Hillman in the west.

Rögnvaldur came west to Ontario in 1874 with his parents, Pétur Jónsson and Ólöf Kjartansdóttir. They moved east to Markland, Nova Scotia and lived there until 1881. They moved from there to the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota where Rögnvaldur grew up. He met and married Guðrún there. They moved to the Mouse River community in 1898. Guðrún Guðlaug was the daughter of Jóhannes Magnússon and Steinunn Jónsdóttir, who came west in 1888.
