Rósa was the daughter of Tryggvi Jónsson and his second wife, Rósa I. Jónsdóttur, early settlers in Pembina, N. Dakota. Sigurður’s parents were Sigurður Jónasson (Sturlaugsson in the west) and Helga Bjarnadóttir. Rósa grew up in Pembina, graduated from there in 1918 and from teachers college in 1921. She taught for a number of years before marriage. Sigurður was a barber.
