Rósa was the daughter of Rev. Oddur V. Gíslason and Anna Vilhjálmsdóttir who came west to Manitoba in 1894. Rósa grew up with her grandmother in Kirkjuvogur, lived in Akranes for two years, and Ísafjörður for four years. From there they emigrated west in 1898 and settled in the Geysir Settlement some time later, naming the land Vatnsdal. She later moved to Arborg.
