Rósmundur was the son of Árni Árnason and Rósa Einarsdóttir. Eleanor’s parents were Friðrik Abrahamson and Sigríður Árnadóttir, who came west from Eyjafjörður in 1887. Rósmundur grew up in Eyjafjörður, went to Adam Þorgrímsson’s night school in Akureyri, but worked as an agricultural worker in the countryside. He came to the West in 1913, settled in Winnipeg and worked as a house painter. He started farming in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) north of Leslie in Saskatchewan in 1918 but later moved to Elfros. Eleanor grew up in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) near Leslie.
