Runólfur Marteinsson was born in S. Múlasýsla on November 26, 1870. He died in Brandon, Manitoba on May 10, 1959.

Runólfur came west to Manitoba in 1883 with his parents, Martein Jónsson and Guðrún Jónsdóttir. He completed primary school and studied theology. He was ordained as a pastor on May 7, 1899 and served many congregations in New Iceland for many years. They moved west to the Pacific coast, lived in British Columbia and Washington, but then moved to Winnipeg and lived there. Ingunn came west in 1887 with her brother Halldór and his family. She worked for many years in Winnipeg.
