Sæunn came west in 1887 wih her parents, Þorsteinn Magnússon and Oddný Þorsteinsdóttir. They settled in N. Dakota. Kristján came west to Ontario, Canada in 1873 with his parents, Björn Skagfjörð and Guðlaug Pálsdóttir. They were first in Rosseau and then Omemee. From there, the family moved to New Iceland and in 1881 to the Hallson Settlement in N. Dakota. Kristján went west in 1891 to the Lögberg Settlement in Saskatchewan where he took land. In 1894, he moved back to N. Dakota and settled west of Akra. They were there until 1900 but then he took land in the Brown Settlement from the state government because he had exercised his right to free land in Canada. In the following years, he made a name for himself in the area and gradually his land ownership grew. For several years he was the largest landowner in the settlement. He then moved to Winnipeg in 1907 and turned to real estate, but continued to own his land in Brown. In 1911 he sold everything and moved west to Vancouver and later south to California.
