Sæunn was the daughter of Markús Ívarsson and Guðríður Guðmundsdóttir in Eyjafjörður but was raised by Jóhannes Jónsson and Þorgerður Kristjánsdóttir. She moved to Seyðisfjörður in 1892 and from there to Norway where she lived until 1901. She returned to Iceland but in 1913, she sailed to Canada and settled in Winnipeg for nearly a year. She then moved to Marietta, Washington where Gunnar lived.
