Salbjörg came west in 1899 with her parents, Sigurður Sölvason and Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir. They settled in Mountain, N. Dakota but moved from there in 1905 to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and lived near Wynyard. Salbjörg and Richard lived in Theodore, Saskatchewan where he managed a bank and was the postmaster.
