Sesselja was the daughter of Hjálmar Jóhannesson and Guðbjörg Sturlaugsdóttir who came west from Dalasýsla in 1888. Hermann came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents in 1898. They settled in the Geysir Settlement in Manitoba in 1901 and there Hermann grew up and lived his life.
