Sigmundur and María moved to Minnesota in the United States in 1883 and settled in Duluth. He was successful there and they lived there for 18 years. They moved to Selkirk, Manitoba in 1901 but then took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1908. There lived Sigurður Hákonarson who had come west from Húnvatnssýsla in 1887, at 68 years of age. Sigmund inherited the old man’s land there as well as other property.
