Hallgrímur came west with his parents in 1883 to Hallson, N. Dakota. The family lived there ten years before moving to Roseau, Minnesota in 1893. They were there until 1903 but then moved to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and Hallgrímur took land near Leslie. He became a shopkeeper and ran a hardware store.
