Sigríður came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with six children in 1911. Her other three children, Össurlína, Rögnvaldur and Egill, had come west to Winnipeg the year before. It was on the advice of her brother, Nikulás Ottenson (west), who came west in 1887 but was in Iceland in 1910 and visited relatives and friends in the Westfjords. Sigríður’s sister Kristjana came west in 1901, so it is clear that Sigríður knew something about the West. The family settled on Home Street in the city and Sigríður sent the youngest to school, while the older ones found work in the city. The sisters Guðbjörg and Össurlína became seamstresses in the city. Egill became a carpenter and last lived in Portland, Oregon, but Dagbjartur, Andrés, Jón and Sigurður later settled in New Iceland. Guðbjörg, Jón and Sigurður used the last name Patrick in the west and had Patreksfjörður in mind.
