Sigrún was the daughter of Ásmundur Kristjánsson and Kristín Þorsteinsdóttir who came west to Winnipeg in 1889. They settled in Alberta in 1910 where Sigrún grew up. After completing elementary school, Sigrún went on to graduate school first in Edmonton and later in Calgary. After her divorce, Sigrún taught in Calgary for the last 15 years of her life.
