Sigurbjörg was the daughter of Ólafur Björn Brynjólfsson who came west to Canada before Sigurbjörg was born. She came west to Canada in 1876 with her mother, Guðrún Kristjánsdóttir, and they settled in New Iceland. There, Guðrún married Guðmundur Guðmundsson Norðmann in 1877 and the couple moved to the Argyle Settlement in 1881. Guðrún died there in 1887 and Sigurbjörg was placed into foster care. Edward Lárus was of Danish descent, and worked as a young man in Reykjavík and studied commerce in Copenhagen. He moved from there west to Canada in 1890 and settled in the Argyle Settlement in Manitoba, a short distance from Glenboro. They moved, newly married, south to N. Dakota where Edward later bought land in Hensel and they lived there the rest of their lives.
