Sigurbjörn Benediktsson was born on July 16, 1875 in N. Þingeyjarsýsla. He died on December 20, 1960 in the Lundar Settlement. He took the name Sigurbjorn Benedictson in the west.

Sigurbjörn came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1879 with his parents, Benedikt Kristjánsson and Hólmfríður Kristjánsdóttir. They settled in New Iceland and that is where Sigurbjörn grew up. Kristveig came west in 1879 with her parents, Jón Frímann Kristjánsson and Kristín Jónsdóttir. Sigurbjörn and Kristveig built a log house by the Icelandic River (Íslendingafljót) north of Riverton. It was called Bjarkarvellir. In 1910 they moved to the Lundar Settlement and settled near Otto.
