Sigurbjörn and Guðrún came west with their daughters to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883. The journey proved to be too much for Guðrún; she died in Winnipeg a few weeks after arriving there. Sigurbjörn placed his daughters with friends in the city, while he did railway work outside the city. Gróa came west across the ocean with her parents, Magnús Einarsson and Ragnhildur Magnúsdóttir in 1887. Her brother Magnús had come west to Winnipeg the year before and from there, he moved to the Þingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan. There he took land himself and also another parcel in his father’s name. Gróa went there in 1887.
