Sigurbjörn Hallgrímsson was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla on August 6, 1841.

They emigrated west to Ontario in Canada in 1874 and lived there the first year. They moved to New Iceland in 1875, living first in Gimli. They then moved to the Árnes Settlement where they lived for four years. They traveled further north to the Fljóts Settlement 1883 but only lived there one year. In 1884 they moved to Flatatunga in the Árnes Settlement and stayed there.
