Sigurður Gunnlaugsson was born in S. Múlasýsla on July 1, 1864. He died in Stillwater, Minnesota on December 16, 1943. He took the last name Gunlogson in the west.

Sigurður came west in 1878 with his parents, Gunnlaugur Magnússon and Guðfinna Vilhjálmsdóttir. They settled in Swede Prairie Township in Yellow Medicine County. Kristjana came west in the same year with her parents, Sigbjörn Sigurðsson and Steinunn Magnúsdóttir, who settled in Westerheim Township near Minneota, Minnesota. Sigurður and Kristjana lived in Yellow Medicine County, moved from there to Montevideo, and later to Minneapolis.
