Sigurður emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1899 and went to Chicago where he studied theology one winter. He moved back to Winnipeg and worked in journalism and publishing, but turned to medicine and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1907. He practiced medicine in Mozart and Wynyard in Saskatchewan and also in Lund, Manitoba. He became editor of the Lögberg newspaper in 1914.
