Sigurður was the son of Jónas Ólafsson and his wife Margrét Ingjaldsdóttir. They came west to Canada in 1873 and first lived in Wisconsin. Life’s road led them to Minnesota where they settled in Lincoln County. Sigurður grew up there and became a carpenter. He worked in house construction in many parts of the United States. Nothing is known about his wife’s origins other than that in the census in 1910 she is said to have been born in Iceland. It should be noted that female names such as Elínborg, Sigurbjörg and Sigurborg were often changed to Bertha.
