Sigurður Jónsson was born in Skagafjarðarsýsla in 1872. He died in New Iceland in 1946. He took the last name Olson in the west.

Sigurður emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883 with his parents and siblings. That same year they moved to Hallson, N. Dakota. Sigurður lived there 13 years before moving north to Winnipeg in 1896. Three years later, he made his last move and settled in the Icelandic River Settlement in New Iceland.
