Sigurður Jónsson was born in Snæfellsnessýsla on May 7, 1881. He took the last name Johnson in the west.

Sigurður came west to Canada in 1888 with his parents, Jón Guðmundsson and Kristín Þórðardóttir. They settled in Tantallon, Saskatchewan. There Sigurður grew up and in 1899 he enlisted in the Canadian Army and served in the Civil War in South Africa from 1900-1902. Þóra came west to Tantallon in 1904. Sigurður came back to Saskatchewan from S. Africa and worked there until 1914, then became a grain merchant until 1944. Then he and Þóra moved to Winnipeg and lived there for four years. They then moved west to the Pacific Ocean where they lived after that.
