Sigurður Jónsson was born in the Árnes Settlement in New Iceland on March 11, 1889. He had the name Sigurdur J. Thorkelsson in the west.

Sigurður was the son of Jón Jónsson and Kristjana Magnúsdóttir, early settlers in New Iceland in 1886. He grew up there and took over farming from his father who lived at Fagranes in the Árnes Settlement. Jóhanna came west in 1901 with her widowed mother, Súsanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir from Ásbjarnarstaðir at Vatnsnes.
