Sigurður came west in 1873 and headed to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was part of the land survey crew who surveyed New Iceland in the summer of 1875 and took part in laying out the settlement area. He lived in Húsavík in the Víðirnes Settlement during this time. He traveled around the land southwest of Winnipeg and bought land there in 1880. He moved there in 1881 and named his farm Grund.
