Sigurjón Þórðarson was born in Eyjafjarðarsýsla in 1867. He died in the Geysir settlment in 1959. He took the last name Thordarson in the west.
Spouse: 1889 Anna Jónsdóttir b. in the same sýsla in 1853, d. 1933.
Children: 1. Þórey b. 1889 2. Ólafur Tryggvi b. 1893 3. Signý Rósbjörg b. in Geysir settlement, d. 1944 4. Jóhannes b. February 4, 1897 in Geysir settlement.
They came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1893 and went to the Geysir settlement where Anna’s sister Björg and her husband lived at Blómsturvallir. Sigurjón took land in the settlement three years later and named his land Nýhaga. There was little farming in the early years, a few chickens and a few cows. After 1910, Sigurjón fished on Lake Winnipeg, going out in the fall and returning in mid-winter. Little by little, the family’s fortune improved, a railway was laid to Árborg and then it was possible to increase the price of forest products. Jóhannes then took over the estate.
