Júlíus grew up in the home of his parents, Bjarni Bjarnason and Gróa Jónsdóttir, in Wisconsin and later in Mountain, N. Dakota. He moved in 1900 to Pipestone, Minnesota and from there to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1911. Sigurjóna Helga came west across the sea in 1893.
