She came west in 1888 with her parents, Guðvaldur Jónsson and Kristín Þorgrímsdóttir, and her siblings. They settled in the Sand Hills Settlement in N. Dakota and Sigurveig lived with them the first years. As a teenager, she took care of herself, did whatever she could, and sometimes lived away from her parents’ home.
