Skafti was the son of Benedikt Arason and Sigurveig Jónasdóttir from S. Þingeyjarsýsla. Guðlaug was the daughter of Guttormur Þorsteinsson and Birgitta María Jósefsdóttir, who came west in 1893 with eight children. They lived in Gimli for the first three years, but then Guttormur bought land in Húsavík in the Víðines settlement. Guðlaug completed her teacher’s degree in Winnipeg and taught in the Víðines settlement for six years. From there her path led to Langruth and later to Arborg. She and Skafti lived in Húsavík, where Skafti handled the postal service alone for 33 years.
