Skafti Sæmundur Halldórsson was born in Reykjavík on February 20, 1873.

Skafti emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887 and lived there a period of time before moving south to the Þingvalla Settlement in N. Dakota. His mother, Jóhanna Kristjana Skaptadóttir, the daughter of Skafti Sæmundsson, a doctor in Reykjavík, lived there. Júlíana emigrated in 1887 to Winnipeg, together with her sister Þorbjörg and her husband, Eggert Sigurðsson. Skafti and Júlíana were married in N. Dakota and bought land there. They moved north to New Iceland about 1900 and took land north of Árnes.
