Skúli was the son of Hallgrímur Guðmundsson and Þórey Ingimundardóttir. They came west in 1888 and first lived in Minnesota, but moved from there to Selkirk, Manitoba. Skúli moved to his sister Valgerður and her husband’s home in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1906. He took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in the Kandahar/Dafoe area and later bought another parcel of land there.
