Sigmundur and Soffía emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 and settled in New Iceland. Sigmundur homesteaded in the Víðirnes Settlement and named it Hjarðarhagi because his family was from Hjarðarhagi in Jökuldal. His mother, the widow Guðlaug Sigmundsdóttir, travelled with them along with Sigmundur’s siblings and other relatives. In 1880, Sigmundur moved to Winnipeg where he lived for a year before moving to the Pembina Settlement in N. Dakota and to the Garðar Settlement in 1883.  They moved once again to the Argyle Settlement in Manitoba in 1902.
