Hans had a Danish father who was the brother of Lovísa, wife of Þorlákur Jónsson at Stóru Tjörnum. Hans and Sólrún came west to New York in 1888 and went overland to Mountain, N. Dakota. They moved in January 1889 to the Akra Settlement and homesteaded there.
