Guðmundur came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, Sölvi Þórarinsson and Þórdís Ásgrímsdóttir, in 1884. Solveig came there with her widowed mother, Sigurlaug Stefánsdóttir, and sisters in 1883. Guðmundur and Solveig lived in Winnipeg until 1904, took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan, lived there a number of years, then sold the land in 1909 and moved to the village of Wynyard. Guðmundur worked in construction there.
