He came west by sea to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, Sveinn Sölvason and Moníka Jónsdóttir, in 1887. His path led him to N. Dakota in 1890 but after a number of years, he moved to Selkirk, Manitoba. Sölvi took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan like his brother Sveinn had done in 1907, but he later sold it. In 1918, he moved to Winnipeg but moved to California a short time later.
