Stefán came west in 1882 and lived in Winnipeg for the first two years. He took land in the Argyle Settlement in 1884 and lived there until 1892. He moved to Winnipeg but Hallfríður was sick and did not move; she died on their land. Stefán worked as a carpenter in Winnipeg, Selkirk, and Edmonton. He moved to Graham Island in 1911 but did not stay long before moving to Edmonton where he died.
