Stefanía came to Canada in 1878 with her mother Elín Stefánsdóttir. Her father, Ólafur Þorsteinsson had arrived there a year earlier. They settled in Markland, Nova Scotia but moved from there in 1880 and settled in the Pembina Settlement in N. Dakota. There Stefanía met Jónas. He came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887 and that same year moved south to Hamilton, N. Dakota. He moved east to the village of Pembina but then chose to study theology at the newly established seminary in Chicago and graduated from there in 1893. He was ordained a pastor the same year and served Icelandic congregations in N. Dakota until 1901. He then moved west to Seattle, Washington where he served in an Icelandic congregation before received a call from the Konkordía congregation in Saskatchewan in 1918. He served there until 1927 when he became pastor of the Icelandic congregation in Selkirk, Manitoba, where he lived until his death.
