Steingrímur Kristján Jónasson was born in Gimli on November 16, 1877. He had the name Steingrimur Hall in the west.

Steingrímur was three years old when he moved with his parents, Jónas Hallgrímsson and Sigríður Herdís Kristjánsdóttir, south to the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota in 1880. He lived there until 1897, when he attended school in Minnesota and began studying music. Sigríður came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887, while her parents, Jón Jónsson from Hólar in Hörðudalur and Halldóra Baldvinsdóttir, had settled in the Lundar Settlement in 1883.
