Þórdís was the daughter of Nikulás Össurarson and Anna Guðmundsdóttir who lived in Winnipeg. She studied music and played an instrument all her life, first in Winnipeg, then Minneapolis. They moved to Los Angeles in 1929. Steinþór and Þórdís lived for a long time in Berkeley, California.
