Svanbjörg came west in 1900 with her parents, Gunnar Guðmundsson and Veronika Eiríksdóttir. They settled in the Árdals Settlement. Kristján came west with his parents, Jón Sveinsson and Jóhanna Jóhannesdóttir, in 1887. They took land in the Geysir Settlement and that is where Kristján grew up. Svanbjörg and Kristján lived in the Árdals Settlement.
