Sveinbjörn emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba about 1895 and worked as a carpenter. There he met Fjóla Anna who had opened a store. In 1906, they moved to Selkirk and lived there four years, then moved to Winnipeg Beach where they lived almost two years. Around 1912 they moved to Winnipeg and worked in hotel operations at Hotel Fort Rouge, while Sveinbjörn also kept working in carpentry. When World War I began, the hotel operations broke down and the family moved from Winnipeg to Transcona (now part of Winnipeg). Although Sveinbjörn had little experience in farming, they decided to move to Riverton in 1918 and they also bought land in the Isafold Settlement. Sveinbjörn had some livestock but continued to work in carpentry. When Anna fell ill with a serious illness, he divided his time between his farm and his Riverton home.
