Þórdís Jóhannsdóttir was born in Minneota, Minnesota on April 23, 1907. She died on November 17, 1995 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Þórdís was the daughter of Jóhann Arngrím Jósefsson and Guðný Sigbjörnsson (Hofteig), who lived at Högnastaðir Lyon County. She graduated from Minneota High School in 1926 and taught in Stewartville from 1928-30 and at St. James from 1930-32. After her husband’s death, she took up the gauntlet again and taught school in Minneota. She attended college while teaching and earned a B.S degree from Mankato State College in 1964. She was active in town government, held various positions of trust, and contributed to her congregation in various ways. Her husband worked in a lumber store in Westbrook, where they lived from 1932.
