Þórður Benediktsson was born on September 16, 1848 in S. Múlasýsla. He died in the Mouse River Settlement in N. Dakota in 1904. He took the last name Benson in the west.

He came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883 and from there to the Pembina Settlement in N. Dakota. In 1894 they moved west to the Mouse River Settlement in N. Dakota and lived there. Sigríður Gísladóttir, Þórður’s mother, and Björn, his brother, accompanied them west and lived with them.
