Þórður Þórðarson was born in Húnavatnssýsla in 1865. He died in Minneota, Minnesota on August 2, 1939.

Þórður emigrated west in 1887 after completing a degree at the Latin School in Reykjavik. He studied science at Cornell University and in 1893-97 he studied medicine in Chicago. He moved to Minneota, Minnesota and practiced medicine until his death. He also edited the paper Vinland in Minneota along with medical work. Sigurbjörg emigrated west with her parents, Sigbjörn Ásbjörnsson and Stefanía Magnúsdóttir. They settled in Selkirk, Manitoba. Sigurbjörg went south to Minnesota to study just before the turn of the century.
