Þórey came west in 1876 with her parents, Stefán Þorsteinsson and Sigurborg Sigfúsdóttir. The family settled at Breiðuvík in New Iceland and called their farm Ljósaland. Gestur came with his parents west in 1874 and lived in Kinmount, Ontario a year. They moved to New Iceland in 1875 and lived in Gimli. Gestur and Þórey took land in the Geysir Settlement and settled there in 1885. They called their farm Hagi.
