Þorgils Jóhannesson was born on May 13, 1878 in Dalasýsla. He died in Winnipeg on February 16, 1944. He took the last name Johnson in the west.

Þorgils came west in 1883 with his parents, Jóhannes Jónsson and Guðrún Andrésdóttir. They were first in New Iceland but moved in 1888 to Winnipeg and Þorgils lived there the rest of his life. He worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad. Guðrún Rósa was the daughter of Jóhannes Halldórsson and Anna Sigurðardóttir who came west in 1878 and settled in N. Dakota.
