Þorkell and Sigríður emigrated west with Pétur Aðalstein and Rósbjörg in 1876. The two older children followed later in 1879 and 1880. They first lived in Winnipeg and there the family took the last name Johnson. They moved to the Lincoln County in Minnesota in 1878. They also lived in the Lyon County Settlement. After Þorkell died, Sigríður and the children moved to Marshall.
