Þorkell came west with his mother, widow Vigdís Guðmundsdóttir, and his siblings in 1887. They travelled to New Iceland where Þorkell worked in fishing. In 1891 he moved to Keewatin, Ontario, where he fished for 12 years. Then he joined forces with Jón Pálmason and worked in his lumber mill. Þorkell sold his share to Jón in 1915. Salóme went west in 1892 and first lived in Winnipeg but from there moved to Keewatin with her first husband, Þorgrímur Thorgrímsen.
