Þorlákur Gunnar Thorlakson was born in the Eyford Settlement in N. Dakota on September 12, 1890. He died in Morden, Manitoba on February 3, 1958.

Þorlákur was the son of Jón Veldemar Þorláksson and his wife Petrína Guðnadóttir. He worked at various agricultural jobs in N. Dakota, joined the Canadian Air Force in 1917, and until the end of the war, flew exercises in Eastern Canada. He settled in Winnipeg after the war and worked at the Eaton’s retail chain for 30 years as a mechanical engineer. His wife had an Icelandic mother, Halldóra Einarsdóttir (Dora Anderson), but his father, George Smith, was Canadian.
