Þorleifur emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his mother, Þuríður Þorleifsdóttir, in 1888 and settled in Mikley. There Þorleifur and Elínborg began farming, but she went west with her parents, Jón Jóhannesson and Solveig Grímólfsdóttir, in 1899. In 1920, Þorleifur moved with his family to Riverton where they lived until 1945.
