Þorsteinn Jónsson was born in S. Þingeyjarsýsla on June 21, 1850. He died on June 15, 1929 in New Iceland. He took the name Mjófjörð in the west.

They emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1886 and went on to the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota. They moved to New Iceland in 1889 and took land in the Víðirnes Settlement, naming the farm Hólm.
